When I look at my circumstances, I’ve been fearful and worried; but when I turn my eyes to Jesus, when I remember His faithful promises, when I trust Him again and again, my faith grows stronger.
Paul talks about Abraham’s faith. He pens his letter emphatically assuring his audience of new believers (both Jew and Gentile) that Abraham’s faith was credited to him as righteousness before he was ever circumcised. (Rom 4)
Paul is helping the Jews and Gentiles understand it wasn’t the act of circumcision that defined Abraham’s faith. Faith is so much more than some outward, religious exercise.
Abraham had come to the end of himself. His body was old and the promise of a child seemed utterly impossible.
But Abraham believed God.
Paul knew those early Christians needed to understand what believing God looks like, and he knew we would as well.
Paul explains “No unbelief made him (Abraham) waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” (Romans 4:20-22)
Paul goes on to say, our belief in Jesus is counted to us as righteousness as we believe like Abraham believed.
But how did Abraham believe?
Abraham believed God was able to do what He promised.
Abraham had a “trust and keep trusting” faith.
Abraham believed God would keep His promises and could bring life from his “dead body” and Isaac was born.
Abraham trusted, once again, when he laid Isaac on the sacrificial fire and God provided the ram. (Gen 22).
Paul says “this counted to him” as righteousness kind of belief is written for us also. (Rom 4:24).
Believe in God…Not just in His existence, but believe in Him and keep believing in Him.
Believe His Son died for you and made the only way for you to be with a Holy God. (John 14:6)
Then keep trusting God with every day and every circumstance.
Trust His promises and keep trusting them.
Yes, when I look at my circumstances, I’ve been fearful and worried; but when I turn my eyes to Jesus, when I remember His faithful promises, when I trust Him again and again, my faith grows stronger.
As I take my eyes off my scary circumstances and look up to Him, I’m fully convinced (over and over) that He is powerfully able to do what He promises.
To do this, I need to:
- Know His promises (read the Word).
- Turn my eyes to Him, and remind myself (over and over) that God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly more than I could ask or imagine. (Eph 3:20).
- Remember, there is no circumstance in my life that God cannot use for my good and His glory. (Rom 8:28).
- Know a God who loves me enough to send His Son to die for me isn’t going to leave me hanging. He will never leave me nor forsake me. (Heb 13:5).
- Keep fearlessly trusting God to be my help. “So we may boldly say, The Lord is my Helper. I will not fear. What can man do to me?”(Heb 13:6).
And then get up and trust God again tomorrow. (Matt 6:34) and remind someone else they can too. ❤️
