I’ve watched him In the mornings for nearly twenty-five years. He opens his Bible. He bows his head and closes his eyes. I know my husband is praying for the Lord to speak to him.
And this morning, as I read Psalms 1, the wisdom of this is not lost on me—
“Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He shall be like a tree
Planted by the rivers of water,
That brings forth its fruit in its season,
Whose leaf also shall not wither;
And whatever he does shall prosper.”
(Psalm 1:1-3)
Because God’s Word is my man’s counsel and delight, I am a blessed, too.
Because my husband, morning after morning, plants himself by rivers of the living water of the Word, he is refreshed again and again.
And as I typed these words, our family received a simple text from his momma, it only said “Psalm 19”.
And I know, my mother-in-law, who raised my man, is doing what she has taught him to do—delighting in the law of the Lord.
I don’t think it’s an accident, that she sent this passage—
“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;
The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;
The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;
The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;
The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;
The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether”. (Psalm 19:7-9)
Righteous. Right. Perfect.
God is the only -Righteous. Right. Perfect.
Remember that!
And His Word is so very good. We all need it every single day! It refreshes us, direct us, restores our souls.
No matter what is going on in our world, despite the chaos around us, God is our Rock.
And He is still speaking to us, through His Word, at just the right moments.
But know this— we have to make the effort to plant ourselves, to sit ourselves down, to open it up, and take it in!!
Turn off the news, and open up the Word.
And when we do, when we delight in the law of the Lord, God gives us wisdom for the things we face, peace that surpasses all understanding and joy—true joy.
No matter what is going on around us.
But not so, the ungodly. Those who give God little thought, and foolishly ignore Him and walk in their own ways, “are like the chaff which the wind drives away.” (Psalm 1:4)
And the winds of hard times, will separate the grain (those who know the Lord) from the chaff (those who don’t).
Hard times may get harder. We are seeing that.
But you and I should keep doing what we know to do. Remember the source of your strength. Hold tight. Hold on.
Our God is still in control. He is! His Kingdom is still powerfully advancing. He is still keeping His promises. Let’s keep planting ourselves by the streams of living water of His Word and be refreshed all the way Home.
