Tuesday after Easter

About now, I think about those who only attend church on Easter and Christmas.

Something draws them there—maybe it’s sweet childhood memories, maybe they are trying to check a box, maybe they are looking for God but are not sure if they can go “all in”.

After all, there’s a lot about faith in a God you can’t see that should cause us to soberly consider what believing in Him really means.

It’s more than a cognitive belief, many churches, many books, and even a fairly quick google search of legitimate sources point to the existence of Jesus Christ—even his death, burial and extra-biblical accounts of his resurrection.

And many know the Bible says, “The demons believe and tremble.” (James 2:19)

So logic tells us faith must include more than a cognitive belief.

And for many, this is where it stops.

They will acknowledge God in attending church occasionally, or even offering up a prayer for friends in need, but their hearts stay far removed from actually following Christ with a heart completely surrendered to Him.

They do not seek to go God’s way in every area of their lives but continue to hold on to the reigns of control.

God is not on the throne of their lives, they are.

They
just
don’t
trust
Him.

For, those who seek to obey God are saying we trust God more than we trust ourselves.

It’s not that we have it all together (we definitely don’t).

Yes, we mess up. We step in sin, but we agree with God that it stinks, and we refuse to leisurely walk in what God calls sin as a lifestyle or habit.

And God blesses that with His abiding presence. That’s where the peace comes. That’s where real faith grows.

There’s no better place than this.

For those who surrender all they know of themselves to all they know of God, God becomes their refuge.

And what a refuge He is!

Those who surrender to the Lordship of Christ find Him better than anything this life can offer, and on top of that—peace and hope and joy that circumstances of this temporary life cannot take away.

Hard times still come but they are okay because they find encouragement as they read the Word, pray, and fellowship with others at church, week after week.

They keep going to God and going to church.

Because there is JOY, real JOY, in the house of the Lord and not just on Easter and Christmas.
