It may not seem like it. You may not feel like it, as we watch political figures and celebrities on stages shaking their fists at the ways of God demanding they know best to rule.
But the truth is, THE MOST HIGH rules!!
Long ago, King Nebuchadnezzar told Daniel the words he had heard in his dream about what God would do. (Dan 4:10-18)
In the vision, the holy one, coming down from heaven, said these things would happen, “In order that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men” ( Dan 4:17)
Glory!
Oh, that we would truly know the MOST HIGH most certainly reigns in the kingdom of men and choose to worship Him!
In Daniel 4, Nebuchadnezzar, the powerful earthly king, is about to know, and know it personally.
He will come to know that Heaven rules as will all who now revel in their temporary fame and power! (Dan 4:26)
Daniel, who must have grown to care for this lost, prideful, often evil king, pleads with him to “break off your sins by being righteous, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor. Perhaps there may be a lengthening to your prosperity.” (Dan 4:27)
But as the king was walking about his kingdom surveying his own greatness and saying, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?” (Dan 4:30) …the hammer drops!
While the word was still in the king’s mouth, a voice fell from heaven and Nebuchadnezzar fell to the ground, driven from men, he eats grass like ox, and lives with the beasts of the field just as the voice from heaven had proclaimed, for seven long years! (Dan 4:31-34)
Abydenus, a Greek historian, wrote in 268 B.C. that Nebuchadnezzar was “possessed by some god” and that he had “immediately disappeared.” (Wood) Furthermore, there is no historical record of Nebuchadnezzar’s governmental activity between 582 B.C. and 575 B.C. (Enduring Word) Hmmm… that’s seven years!
Once again, as He always will, God did what He said He would do.
And when God was ready, and Nebuchadnezzar’s pride broken, and his heart repentant, Nebuchadnezzar is restored-
“And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever:
For His dominion is an everlasting dominion,
And His kingdom is from generation to generation.
All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing;
He does according to His will in the army of heaven
And among the inhabitants of the earth.
No one can restrain His hand
Or say to Him, “What have You done?”
At the same time my reason returned to me, and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and splendor returned to me. My counselors and nobles resorted to me, I was restored to my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me. Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride He is able to put down.” (Dan 4:34-36)
Can we just stop and praise the ETERNAL King of Heaven? He reigns! His Kingdom shall never end.
No man can glory in His presence, but, oh, how we try.
But once we realize, that same, Most High God, sent His Son to die for us when we had done absolutely nothing to earn it, when we were actually His enemies, surely we are emptied of pride and filled with awe. (Rom 3:23, 5:8)
May we humbly submit to Him. May we know we can trust Him more than we trust ourselves. May we praise Him, THE Most High, Who rules, and Who is, and was, and is to come! (Rev 1:8)
May we find peace in that in this crazy world.
