I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before. Over the years, well, as long as I remember I have struggled with anger.
Oh it’s much better now (thank you Jesus), but when I was little, my grandpa (I called him “Papaw” because that’s what we do in the South), told me “Most folks need to count to ten when they get mad. Kim, you need to count to 100.”
And it’s kind of funny, but it has also caused me some pain when I failed to heed that warning.
And you know, as I read Genesis 4 and the very familiar account of Cain killing Abel, I notice that Cain became angry (Gen 4:5) and God warned him.
God warned him.
God told Cain, “Sin lies at your door. And it’s desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” (Gen 4:7)
God warns us.
Sin lies at our doors. It’s desire is to consume us and destroy us.
But we can rule over it.
Here’s the thing, we may feel like sinning but we don’t have to!
We don’t have to give in to sin’s dread sway!
We have a choice. Though we may tempted, if we will pause, (if we will count to 100 even) we can choose to flee sin and avoid all kinds of trouble and pain from the consequences.
And God’s Word helps us take these “pauses”.
For at just the right time, the Helper will remind you of “help-you-truths”.
Jesus tells us , “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26)
So, the question is, have you read what God has said in the Bible so the Holy Spirit, the Helper, the Comforter, can remind you at just the right time?
If so, listen for His voice. Take a pause! And avoid all kinds of misery-making trouble!
Yes, when you spend time in the Word, it will not return void. As you read it AND as you heed it (unlike Cain) you can walk in freedom, peace and victory!
