It had been one of those days. I had worked and worked and felt like others weren’t doing their share.

I had been playing the pity party music in my head for quite some time when my mom mentioned that my daddy’s feet were hurting him again.

She explained that every morning she washes his feet and then puts lotion on them and this morning they were very sore.

And I thought, “Every morning? She washes his feet EVERY morning? And puts lotion on them?”

What’s more, my momma works so hard to do so many things she didn’t used to do around their home. She has even taken to watching YouTube ‘how to’ videos.

She also tirelessly provides incredible care for my ninety-year-old Daddy.

AND she washes his feet every day and puts lotion on them. Every. Day.

And if all that wasn’t enough for me to get the Lord’s message, yesterday, I read a story on a ministry page about a young mom, who when frustrated with her small children, picks them up on the counter and washes their little feet. She said it refocuses her heart every time and calms her little ones.

Then, this morning, I came to Luke 14 about serving others without excuse (verse 1-6) and humbling ourselves instead of seeking our own glory and blessing in this life (7-14).

And it occurred to me (the very slow learner) that’s what Jesus always did.

The King of King’s served others without excuse and did not seek His own glory.

God tells us when we live this way, “you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” (Luke 14:14)

God is so good to remind us of truth through His Word and our circumstances and help reset our focus as it should be.

May we love and serve others unselfishly without expecting anything in return.

May we do so because this is the example of the One we call Lord.

May our attitude be more like His and may we seek His glory more than we ever seek our own.
