The Unpardonable Sin

As a little girl, I remember sitting at my grandparent’s house hearing the grown ups talk of the “unpardonable sin”.

I would plug my ears as tight as I could with my fingers, knowing if I heard what it was, I’d surely do it.

Even back then, I knew what a wandering, sin-prone, rebellious heart I had.

Jesus describes the sin that will not be forgiven —blaspheming the Holy Spirit. (Matt 12:31)

John Piper describes blasphemy of the Holy Spirit as, “a willful, determined, settled opposition to God and His Spirit.”

Settled opposition.

It is true, God gives us chance after chance. He relentlessly pursues lost hearts.

It’s also true that we can’t out-sin His ability to forgive us.

But we can deny Him.
Again and again.

And one day, no one can know when, there will be that one last chance, to turn from ourselves and our sin and run to Him.

One day, it will be too late and our opposition to a kind merciful God will be forever settled.

This is blaspheming the Holy Spirit—not something we accidentally do.

We should be fearful of this if we have dug in our heals and willfully refused to follow Christ.

If we look back just a few verses in Matthew, before Jesus talks about blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, He says, “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matt 10:28)

Certainly God is good. He is so very good. We need to know that, and tell others that.

But we also need to know if someone has decided to go their own way and deny Him, never to repent of their sins and follow Him, there should be fear. Real fear.

For God is a just God and those who deny Him will be denied before the angels of God (Luke 12:9).

But as long as we have breath in our lungs, it’s not too late! But the thing is, none of us know when that last breath will come.

What if today was that day? What if today was that day for someone you love? Have you tried to tell them? (Are you gathering with Jesus, Matt 12:30)

Later, Matthew will record these words of Jesus. Let’s all unplug our ears and believe Him when He says, “ Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matt 24:44)

Are you ready? Are those you love ready? What if today was that day?
