Eternal or temporary? Am I storing up treasure in heaven or spinning my wheels collecting what will never last? What’s on your agenda for this new week?
In talking about this, in Matthew 6:19-24, Jesus is asking us to examine our hearts. The One who knows us better than we know ourselves tells us we can’t serve both God and money. We will be devoted to one and hate the other.
It’s not that He is saying money is wrong, but do we serve it or use it to serve God? If we are singularly focused to honor God with our treasure, then our “eye is healthy” and our “ whole body full of light”. (Matt 6:22)
But if our focus is on ourselves and temporary pleasures, or if we are depending on money for our security then that darkness is deep (Matt 6:23).
The thing is, a divided heart will eventually mess with our minds. We will become unstable in all our ways. (James 1:8)
What’s more, when we are focused on storing up treasure here, it means we’ve forgotten the eternal and are trusting ourselves more than we trust God or what He says in His Word.
We will be ripe to be consumed by worry. We will constantly need just a little bit more to feel happy and secure.
And that “little bit more” could be money, or it could be other things like the praise of others, job success, romance, and on and on.
But Jesus gives us instruction to help us live free from looking to the wrong, empty fleeting, treasures for our peace. He helps us overcome things like anxiety and worry by looking to Him….and we will talk more about that tomorrow.
