“Allow it for now” (Matt 3:15, CSB)
John the Baptist was protesting when he was asked to baptize Jesus, then Jesus tells him to “allow if for now” so prophecy could be fulfilled.
John obeyed.
Jesus was baptized.
And God was fulfilling His plan.
We are to obey the Lord even when we don’t understand just how He is at work. For it is out of our obedience that He does work.
And I have to admit, I sometimes want God to quickly explain to me why I should obey when it seems that another way would be better.
But my assessment, and yours, of any situation is always, ever, limited.
God ALWAYS sees the big picture. He knows the beginning from the end.
He says, “ I declare the end from the beginning, and from long ago what is not yet done, saying: my plan will take place, and I will do all my will.” (Isa 46:10)
And oh my goodness! What comfort is there in that! Our all-good God has a good plan that will certainly take place!
So in the moments of choice, let’s always choose to do as He says and trust Him more than we trust us. Who knows what He will do with our mustard seed sized faith and obedience?!
This means we daily choose to obey the Lord over what seems right to us or our feelings and over what our culture says.
Who knows what situations and hearts are impacted by our simple, daily choices to do what God says in his Word.
And you know what else? The longer I walk with Jesus, the less I feel the need for Him to explain to me what He is doing. As I remember His faithfulness, I know He will keep on being faithful. That’s just Who He is.
He is a good God who can be trusted. And there is peace in that far greater than my circumstances can give.
