Stop. Look up. Worship!

Oh, how she worshipped!

The religious leaders plot to kill Jesus. while Mary (the sister of Martha and Lazarus) anoints Him with expensive oil in an act of extravagant worship.

But the disciples, they don’t understand. They reason that perfume could have been sold to help the poor.

And Judas is enraged.

Judas, the disciple and treasurer, is so enraged about what he deems to be waste that he slips away to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. (Matt 26:1-16)

But Jesus.

Jesus receives Mary’s lavish worship. He knows His time is short and that perfume will prepare His body for burial (Matt 26:12).

What about us? We know how Jesus defeated death on a Cross so we could live. The entire world is forever impacted.

But Mary lost herself in worship only knowing a bit of the story. She was so intently focused on her Savior.

Did she somehow know His time was short? Had His words about dying not been missed by her ears?

But what about us who live this side of the Cross?

What about us who can hold His holy words in our hands and can have His Holy Spirit supernaturally live inside of us? Are we not drawn to extravagant worship?

Or are we so focused on the temporal, are we so busy with our families, Christmas shopping, even our ministries, that we fail to lavishly worship the glory of the Savior who is with us?

God with us!
He really is you know!

Do we ever lose ourselves and give all we have in worship because we are singularly focused on His amazing goodness?

Yes, we all have many things to do, many good things worthy of doing, but let’s don’t forget to allow ourselves the time to stop, to look up, to truly be in awe and wonder of the Savior we celebrate this CHRISTmas season!

For He is good. He is better than my words could ever tell. He is worthy of extravagant worship.

Mary knew and lived that, may we as well!
