Well, I’ve come to a portion of scripture where theologians disagree—the two parables – about mustard seed and leaven (Matt 13:31-35).
Most believe these refer to Christianity spreading; but some argue these are a warning about evil mixing in when the church grows unusually large.
Those who believe this passage is a warning point to this abnormal growth of a mustard seed that attracts birds and the leaven (both birds and leaven are normally associated with evil) and because Jesus has just been talking about evil being mixed among the good (in the Parable of the Wheat and Tares).
And you know,
I don’t know.
I could see it either way.
My point here is that as we study scripture we may not understand everything we read. God may have us come back to a passage years later before we settle on what He is actually saying. We may wrestle with it, chew on it ,ask others, and pray for understanding.
But in the seeking, and in the keeping-on seeking, God does speak. He uses His Word for us. And it’s okay to say, “I don’t know”. I think that is just part of seeking Him. And I simply trust that He helps us know what we need to know as we need to know it.
Likewise, I believe the Lord gives us what we need as we need it. Have I argued, and begged, and pleaded for a different answer or a different timing when it comes to life’s questions? Yes, and still more often than I wish.
But, at the same time, I’m confident God has me and all that concerns me. The more I get to know His goodness as He reveals Himself in His Word, the better I am getting at resting in His will and His timing over mine.
I believe God is a patient Teacher who doesn’t expect us to get everything all at once. But as we seek Him, as we keep seeking Him even when we don’t understand, we find Him.
And in the nearness of Him, we find rest and we find hope. Again and again.
