Jesus says, “And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, he shall by no means lose his reward.” (Matt 10:42)
A cup of water.
Only a cup of water.
That’s not much.
As humans, we are tempted to think those small things, those things not seen or rewarded by others, don’t really matter much.
And a cup of water?
Won’t the person just get thirsty again?
But we aren’t to do what we do for the praise of others, AND we aren’t responsible for the outcome. We are only to serve the Lord in whatever way we can.
And the “littlest” of things done for the cause of Christ do not go unnoticed, and will be rewarded, by our Father in Heaven who sees.
And with that, my heart is encouraged to simply serve Him each day. I can trust Him even when I don’t see huge results or any at all.
I know God can bring good from my most insignificant acts of obedience when my heart is set on bringing Him glory rather than myself.
What’s more, I don’t constantly need to be looking for God to do a big thing through me. He only asks I be faithful in what He has laid out before me.
I can also rest content knowing He sees me serving even when others may not, when I’m not openly rewarded, and even when my acts of service to Him are misunderstood.
Oh friends, let’s remember, we are storing up treasure in heaven and every reward this side of eternity is fleeting.
And with that, we can keep our eye on the prize. We can serve one day at a time wherever the Lord has us. We can simply focus on the obedience, and we can rest knowing the results are up to Him and the glory is all His to be had.
