What I remember when I want to quit.

I remember it was early morning, and I was weary and wondering if God really wanted me to keep studying and publicly sharing what He was teaching by speaking and writing. This was years ago.

I sat praying and wrestling with how easy it seemed for some to only give the things of Christ a Sunday-only glance (if that) while I was up before the chickens digging deep with my Bible and my commentaries.

I began reading where I had left off the day before. It was this passage—
“Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear preach on the housetops. And do not fear those who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matt 10:27-28)

I remember thinking that seemed pretty timely.

As I brushed my teeth, I flipped over my scripture calendar and that days’ verse, was again, the SAME verse.

I remember thinking, “What is the mathematical probability of that?!”

Then, I left to drop my kids to school (who were still young all those years ago) and the same verse was read on Christian radio.

I was stunned! God definitely had my attention.

And I’ve thought about this in the many times since I’ve been tempted to stop sharing truth from the Word. I marked that passage in my Bible. I drew a heart and wrote “my calling”. It’s kept me going.

What’s more, I’ve seen my good Father repeat other things I read in the early mornings at different times; and I’ve learned to take notice when a friend may bring up the same verse I have read, or my pastor may preach on it.

God so often uses my quiet time with Him to whisper something. Not always, or even often, but sometimes, He will repeat Himself. And it causes my heart to leap when He does!

I so love it when He’s “loud” like this. I so appreciate how He speaks when we tune our hearts to hear Him and set our feet to follow Him.

What He says is not always easy, but when He speaks, so very clearly, I find added strength and keep-going purpose.

But we need to understand, if we want to hear from the Lord, we have a responsibility to sit ourselves down to do so. We have to get in the habit of getting quiet in this loud world and daily tuning our hearts to Him.

As we do this, we will better learn to hear His whispers, and we will joyfully delight when He repeats Himself to make Himself clearly known. .

He’s so very good. How He makes Himself known and how that keeps me going. Doesn’t it you?

What a Savior!
