I know you can. But God, will you?

Matthew chapter 8 opens with a leper kneeling at Jesus’ feet and saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus replies, “I am willing; be made clean.” (8:3)

And the Enduring Word quotes an old Scottish theologian, known to have wrestled in his early years through trials and doubts, who says, “Men more easily believe in miraculous power than miraculous love.” (A.B. Bruce)

And I know this is true of my heart.

Though I rarely say it aloud, “ I know God can, but WILL He? Is He so lovingly involved in my life that He would answer the prayer so heavy on my heart? “

I believe in His miraculous power; but to believe in miraculous love for me, the me I know, the me who has done things and thought things that I know He knows…that’s harder.

But I also know this, God sent His Son to die for me and you. He miraculously conquered death and the grave BECAUSE He miraculously loves us.

He miraculously loves us knowing all the ways we’ve doubted and failed Him and all the ways we will still.

He bought us with a high price (1 Cor 6:20) and lavishly loves us and calls us His children. (1John 3:1)

He is a PERFECT Father who desires to give good gifts to His children. He just told us that in Matthew 7:11.

So why wouldn’t He miraculously love us enough to willingly do good things for us?

I think we so easily assume He would not, but we should assume He can, and He will, unless He tells us otherwise (as in the case of Paul and the thorn God did not remove for a higher good).

Let’s keep looking to His powerful hand and let’s trust His loving heart.

For He is working all things together for good for those who love Him and are called to His purpose! (Rom 8:28)
