Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matt 7:12)
This is often called the Golden Rule. Jesus is summing up the Law and Prophets, in that, if we simply treated others in the way we want to be treated, we would be obeying the Law and Prophets.
Spurgeon said, “Oh, that all men acted on it, and there would be no slavery, no war, no swearing, no striking, no lying, no robbing; but all would be justice and love! What a kingdom is this which has such a law!”
What’s more, I believe as we have this mindset and try to incorporate this instruction for treating others as we want to be treated (in our personal, business and other relationships), we will find a strange peace settling our souls.
For when we do this, when we obey in this area, even when those around us do not treat us the same way, we are effectively saying, “God we trust You more than we trust us, and the outcome is up to You”.
When we obey, we don’t get in God’s way of blessing us because of our sinful actions toward another. Our conscience is clear. And there’s truly unexplainable peace there.
For even if we are treated poorly, if those we are trying to love don’t treat us well, we know we are following our Savior in our actions. He loved the unlovely. He blessed those who cursed Him. And anytime we choose to follow Christ in our actions, we know we are standing on the side of victory, and we can rest in His peace and protection.
