Jesus talks about how to fast and pray and emphasizes to do so in a way where it’s not obvious to others -just to God. (Matt 6:6-18)
Jesus is pointing to a real, intimate relationship that He made possible between people and God. This was radical to the Jews of the day to think they could directly talk to God about their personal concerns.
It’s kind of radical to some of us, too. Do we really believe God will speak if we fast and pray? Have we actually tried it?
By fasting, we are setting aside something in order to focus more clearly and hear a response from our Father. When we fast, we are expecting the God of the Universe to reveal Himself to us in regards to a specific matter at hand that matters to us. Maybe just to us.
The whole premise of fasting and prayer is that we believe God will speak, will intervene, and will involve Himself in the very specific things that concerns us.
We are not fasting and praying to some aloof God, but to a God who loves us and is at work for our best.
And He will speak. He will answer. He will move in our lives and the lives of those we love as we seek Him!
And if you have trouble believing that, go read Mark 9:14-29. Play close attention to verses 24 and 29. Isn’t that incredible? 💕
God makes it clear in His Word that He will even help us with our unbelief! That is a relational God who loves us and is involved in our lives! Why else would He let us know it’s okay to say, “I believe. Help my unbelief!”
Oh, don’t you love Him??!!!
