You may know this, but I didn’t.
While Abraham, Sarah and Peter were all renamed by God, Paul renamed himself.
His former name, Saul, means “asked for” or “prayed for”.
Saul had lived in the “big time”. He was smartest of the smart, a leader…people knew his name and revered him.
Then he meets Jesus.
He turned from a religious zealot persecuting Christians, and became one of the most famous preachers and leaders of the Christian Church.
Today, he would get the most likes on his Facebook posts, his conferences would sell out, and his books would be bestsellers.
Yet, Saul changed his own name to mean “small”.
SMALL.
small.
Every time someone called his name, Paul heard “small”—a constant reminder that God must become more and he become less —a continual whisper to daily die to self.
Oh, how Paul must have known how easily our hearts are seduced with a love for self and how quickly we are tempted to bask in glory that only God deserves.
I don’t know about you, but I love that and need to be reminded every day, because I can too easily “love me some me”!
God, help me to become less and You become more every day. Remind me that as I daily die to self and give You glory it is there that I truly live.
Thanks “Small Paul”. I needed that!
