A wise pastor once explained to one of my children that salvation is one big decision to follow Jesus and then lots of daily decisions to keep following Him.
To be a Christ-follower, means we no longer go our own way but follow Christ as Almighty God.
We are to follow His way (as defined by Scripture) over our way, in every way. (Matt 16:24).
It’s true that by His grace we’ve been saved, but so many, who call themselves Christians, live today as if they believe grace is this free ticket to use for those parts of Scripture they prefer not to follow.
That’s not what grace is for…that’s called rebellion. Period.
Certainly, we don’t want to rebel against the Almighty God. We want to be wise. The Bible tells us fear of Him is the beginning of wisdom. (Prov 9:10)
I love the way C.S. Lewis illustrates this in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe when Mr. Beaver tells Susan that Aslan (the ruler of Narnia) is a great lion. (Aslan represents God in the story). Susan is surprised, since she assumed Aslan was a man. She then tells Mr. Beaver, “I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion.” She asks Mr. Beaver if Aslan is safe, to which Mr. Beaver replies, “Safe? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King.”
He’s the Almighty God, “‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. “
The wise still seek Him!
The wise reverentially fear Him. They seek to follow Him. And they know He is good.
They continue to confidently trust and obey as they remember He is Almighty God:
There is nothing too hard for Him! (Jer 32:27)
No word of His will ever fail.(Luke 1:37)
He is the refuge and fortress that can be trusted. (Psalm 91:1-2)
He is the ruler of all things.
In His hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. (1 Chron 29:12)
So as we prepare our hearts to celebrate The Almighty God of CHRISTmas, may our prayer be that of the psalmist:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my concerns.
See if there is any offensive way in me;
lead me in the way everlasting”. (Psalm 139:23-24)
The way everlasting is the way of the Almighty God.
Not our way. His better way.
