I often say, “good listening” to my two year old granddaughter after she’s struggled, and I’ve coaxed, but she decides to obey what I’m asking her to do.
I realized this week, it is still not so different with me and God sometimes.
Just this Monday, as my work and family task list felt extra long, my husband called to tell me he needed me to get my car into the shop.
“Doesn’t he know how busy I am?” I grumbled to myself and then to him.
He went on, “ I really think you need to do this” to which I replied, that “I’d get to it but it couldn’t be a priority for my busy Monday.”
I hung up the phone and began to wrestle. God reminded me of His Word.
“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” (Col 3:18)
I have wondered why Paul didn’t start with the next verse about husbands loving their wives. (Col 3:19)
Like most of you I’ve heard words like “submit” are out of style. Can’t we just ignore this?
Nope.
The truth is, not only is the call for wives to submit still relevant and needed today, I believe Paul was intentional about his placement of his instruction.
For the truth is, as wives we are to submit because it is fitting in the Lord regardless of how busy we are, or how well we think our husbands are loving us.
What’s more, we are to do this because the entire well-being of our home can be impacted by our obedience to being the kind of wife God has called us to be.
And let me tell you, God showed me this Monday in a BIG way.
I phoned the repair shop about my car on Monday and found out my car’s warranty ended on Tuesday! The gentleman was kind enough to tell me to come in immediately and they would get a claim started so the repair would be covered!
What if I had waited?
I recounted this story to a close friend who knows me well and she teased and said, “good listening” and we laughed at how I wasn’t much different than my two year old granddaughter who struggles to listen sometimes.
But sometimes, I know submission to our husbands is not so quickly rewarded or easy to live.
Maybe your marriage is hard and your husband is not loving you well at all. Maybe you need a miracle in your marriage.
Friends, I believe it true that sometimes we won’t see the miracle we are longing for if we aren’t even willing to obey the things we know God has said.I’m not suggesting we compromise godly principles or stay in an abusive situation.
I am saying that there may be some things we aren’t doing that we could do to better reflect Christ in our home.
I believe God will bless those things.
Don’t discount the miraculous things God can do with our “simple” acts of obedience to Him.
