Unfathomable Grace

I deserve Hell, and so do you. That is not popular to say.

Most people will probably stop reading with that sentence and scroll on past—non-Christians and Christians alike.

We’d all rather hear how much God loves us. And He does. He truly does.

But we need to also, and I believe often, allow ourselves to remember, to truly understand , just how true it is that we each deserve Hell.

And I don’t mean “we” in the global humanity sense, but I mean me, and I mean you, in the very personal, fill-in-the-blank with our names, you and I, deserve nothing but a horrible end in Hell.

It is quite notable that these thoughts come to me as sit by the ocean, with God’s Holy Words, taking in all the beauty He is allowing me to see—the sound of waves, and the cool feel of the wind, stand in stark contrast to the absolute truth that I deserve Hell.

There is no good in me. My sins were great, and still are great. But God, by His grace, His unfathomable grace, stepped in a saved me from the penalty of my sin.

My wretched heart deserves nothing but His divine wrath.

And wretched it is. For in this moment, while my eyes behold the beauty of His creation, I’ve allowed my heart to remember the ugly sin God has saved me from. And not only that, but the awful deeds and thoughts I know my flesh is still so very capable of…

How many times have I failed?
or will I yet fail again?
to choose to turn from sin and follow Him?

How many times in just in this ONE day? Surely, these times are too numerous to count.

But God sees and knows them all. He knows everything I’ve ever done, or thought, or will do, or think, and yet, He sent His precious Son to die and save me!

My life was barreling toward self destruction and Hell when God, by His grace, stepped in and saved me.

I did nothing to deserve His grace and mercy. I did not earn it. I could not earn it. And neither could you.

That’s the greatest news, that is the gospel.

Oh, how great a debtor are those who have been saved by the blood of the Lamb!

Surely, He has forgiven us so very much and will continue to forgive so very much —for He does not hold our sins against us!

Because of the precious blood of Christ!
