If your faith is built on only what you can see right now, or feel, or understand, it won’t get you very far.
We will face things in this life that don’t make sense to us.
Hard times.
Dark places.
But remember, Peter talked about the prophecy of scripture being as a light shining in a dark place. (2 Pet 1:19)
The prophetic word came true in Jesus Christ.
Because Jesus is Who He says He is and did what He said He would do, we can keep trusting Him to keep doing what He says. Our job is to seek to follow Him and keep following Him.
He tells us how in His Word.
Remembering God’s promises, and believing He keeps them when we face things we don’t like or don’t understand, helps us continue to keep going.
But remembering is so much more than an emotion, it is an ACT OF THE WILL.
I may not FEEL God’s nearness, but I choose to remember He is always near His children. (Eph 2:13, Ps 139:7-10).
I may not SEE how He can bring good from my hard situation right now, but I choose to remember He can. (Rom 8:28)
I may THINK some things sound good, but when Scripture calls them wrong, I will not compromise truth. (Prov 16:25)
I may not UNDERSTAND why God calls some things sin when the world we live in does not, but I will choose to follow His ways over the world’s ways. (Prov 3:1-7)
When Peter wrote his letter, he knew his time on earth was short.
In his last words, he pleads for Christians to be diligent in growing their faith. He tells them to add to their faith things like: virtue, knowledge, self control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love. (2 Pet 1:7)
Peter says, “for if you do these things” (an act of the will) …there is reward (2 Pet 1:10-11).
We may not always like or understand what is going on in our lives, but one day, our faith will become sight! One day our eyes will see Jesus return as conquering King!
In John chapter 6, Jesus had just said some hard things. People didn’t understand. Many were walking away. But look what Peter says—
“After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God”. (John 6: 66-68)
Oh friend, may we be like Peter…to Whom else should we turn? Whom else should we follow? Let’s choose to follow Jesus, as He tells us in His Word, even in our dark days.
Let’s count on Him to keep His promises. He always has. He always will!
