Jesus clearly tells his disciples he will be condemned to death and will rise on the third day (Matt 20:17-19).
And you’d expect to read of the disciples awe-filled response.
But instead, the mother of two of the disciples, James and John, starts lobbying for her sons to have prominent seating in the Kingdom.
It’s embarrassing to moms everywhere but not totally shocking.
In our efforts to take care of our kids, we all often miss the eternal right under our noses. We often think we can maneuver for our children’s best without truly listening to the Lord’s instructions first.
I’m holding the mirror of the Word up to my own nose here too.
Do we pray about situations involving our kids before we respond? Do we sign up for every opportunity to showcase their talents without thinking about how that time commitment will impact our Sundays and our family’s spiritual growth?
Without praying, do we run to rescue them from every difficult situation and forget that sometimes God might want to show them He can bring good from hard in their lives too?
Do we center our lives around our children instead of God and forget our husbands in the process?
I’m so thankful God made the Word so real. We see flawed people who look a lot like us. But we also see God using flawed people to do great things.
The gospel of Mark tells us this same momma was there at the tomb of Jesus and got to see the angel and the stone rolled away! She was sovereignly trusted with this supernatural moment.
So, let’s remember to prayerfully consider the eternal as we guide our kids, but let’s also know, our Heavenly Father is patient with us and uses us even after we mess up when we keep running to Him.
