Joe Biden called the horrific actions of Hamas (including the decapitation of babies, the rape of women, the burning alive of entire families) sheer evil.
Sheer EVIL.
Joe Biden is right.
However, this statement is, at its heart, not a political one, but a theological one.
Now whether Mr. Biden meant this in this sense —who knows. But his statement clearly alludes to the existence of something beyond biology, beyond human existence —forces of good and evil that affect the hearts and minds of men.
For if these forces do not exist, then there is no right or wrong and all that happens is simply excusable as biological survival of the fittest. People are no different than animals, no right or wrong, just a quest for survival.
In this sense, the beheading of babies would not be wrong, but merely part of the survival of the fittest..,unless of course there is a standard of right and wrong and good and evil.
C.S. Lewis was noted as wrestling with this in his search for truth— “For if evil was real, then there must be an absolute standard by which it was known to be evil and an absolute good by which evil could be distinguished from good. Where could we get this infinite reference point, this fixed point above all our personal and cultural bias? Did that not demand a God as an adequate basis for absolute good?”(Lindsley).
A good God? A perfect God. An intelligent designer? A God of the Bible?
Thousands of years ago, a man named Paul claimed to have encountered this supernatural all-good God and wrote, “his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,in the things that have been made. So they (we) are without excuse.” (Rom 1:20)
This same Paul refused to recant his testimony of God and was martyred for it.
So, if God exists, and the Bible is true, we are without excuse.
For unlike the animals, we can recognize good and evil in this fallen world in which we live.
What’s more, unlike the animals, we were divinely created with an eternal spirit and have been given a free will to choose the side of a Holy, completely-good, God or the side of evil—evil which is certainly present in this fallen world.
And because we were born into a fallen world, we also have a sin nature, and each of us have committed acts of evil. None of us are completely good. And because of that, we cannot stand in the presence of an all-good, Holy God.
But Jesus.
Jesus-God in human form came to earth and took the penalty of our sins upon Himself, so we “may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they (we) may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in (Christ) (Acts 26:18)
Oh friends, Joe Biden is right, sheer evil does exist but so does good —a good God who sent His Son to rescue us from the enemy of our souls!
He, who was without sin, a Holy God came to earth and walked among us. He made a way for us when He willingly went to the Cross!
He is the way, the truth and the light. But no one comes to the Father except through Him. (John 14:6)
The question is, which way will you choose?
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:4-5)
