If you know the Lord, you’ve got the best friend you could ever have.
Some people will never forget the bad things you’ve done.
But God forgets.
He remembers the sins of His children no more. (Heb 8:12)
For years, I knew this without thinking about what that might look like. Lately, through my Dad’s illness, I think I’ve caught a glimpse.
My Dad is one of the best men I’ve ever known; but like many of us, he has had conflicts with a few people along the way.
Daddy struggled especially when people didn’t treat his family well; and he had a hard time forgetting what they had done.
My Dad now has dementia. It’s a horrible disease.
A while back, we saw someone Dad had pretty much decided wasn’t a very good person. In fact, Dad didn’t like him much at all.
I was a bit nervous as to what Dad might say; but I was SHOCKED when he looked at me and said, “That’s such a fine man.”
Honestly, I about choked on my own spit in that moment.
But then, Hebrews 8:12 came to mind: “For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”
God mercifully CHOSE to be merciful toward my iniquities and proved His love for us when He sent His Son to die for us when He knew every bad thing we would ever do.(Rom 5:8)
And God CHOSE to remember our sins no more!
They are as gone as gone can be! He removes them as far as the east is from the west!
What a friend we have in The Lord!
Perhaps King David’s words are especially fitting as we think of this:
“Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
The Lord works righteousness
and justice for all who are oppressed.
He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel.
The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. “ Psalm 103:1-13
HE is the best friend we could ever have!
His love is everlasting (Jer 31:3)
Should we daily confess our sins and follow Him? Oh yes!
Should we reverentially fear Him? Certainly!
But, then, let’s rest in the fact that He remembers our sins no more!
And He doesn’t leave!
“There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Prov 18:24
That’s Christ, The LORD!
Celebrate the perfect love of a perfect Savior!
