Deconstruction,Progressivism, Worldview Matters!

Worldview Matters

In some cases, Christians are being led to rethink all of their previously held beliefs, dismantle them, and sometimes they do this to the point of no longer identifying as a Christian. This is called #deconstruction.

Unfortunately, I’ve recently spoken with many parents of college students that have attended local Christian Universities that say their once-professing-Christian children have lost their way and even rejected Christianity all together due to these false ideas, students are hearing from supposed Christian professors that are embracing progressive Christianity.

These professors are using their “Christian” classrooms to teach these ideas and indoctrinate students.

What can you do? Look up every professor on every social media platform. Google them. Know who they follow, retweet, promote and glean from because whoever that is will be the ones teaching the next generations. If a student is going to attend a Christian university they’ll expect correct Biblical teaching. They need to know that’s not always the case and you cannot trust that every professor is going to be teaching truth just because it’s a “Christian” university. It is the same with biblical churches and organizations. “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” Matthew 7:15

Learn to recognize what Progressive Christianity looks like and teach your kids to do the same.

Progressive Christianity can sometimes look a bit like a club for former disgruntled workers. There’s lots of space to gripe about how unfair the management has been operating for all these years, the reasons why the company is failing and the call for a new employee handbook with a more up-to-date employee code of conduct that fits today’s culture. All the training, systems, approaches and ideas of the past are broken apart and scrutinized. Just imagine a walk-out in front of the pearly gates complete with picket signs and yelling of chants demanding for change. Many pride themselves in bringing into question the historical doctrines and understanding of scripture and reimagining a more loving, accepting universal God that was much less concerned with holiness that previously thought.

Alisa Childers accurately describes this in her book “Another Gospel,” “In progressive Christianity, doubt has become a badge of honor to bask in, rather than an obstacle to face and overcome.” (52)

Be aware of this – There’s no greater sin in Progressive Christianity than judging others. Scripture tells us in 1 Corinthians 5:11 that we are to judge other Christians and we are instructed not even to have a meal with someone who says they are a Christian yet is guilty of ongoing unrepented sins such as sexual immorality. It says “Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? Purge the evil person from among you.” The fullness of Matthew 7:1-5 is rarely communicated today. Matthew 7:1 “Judge not, that you be not judged.” Is used quite a bit but moving down the verse we see it says (3) Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? (4) Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eyes; when there is a log in your own eye? (5) You hypocrite, FIRST take the log out of your own eye, and THEN you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” These verses are constantly taken out of context. The Bible is NOT telling us not to judge…it’s telling us not to judge UNTIL we have first looked at ourselves, but after we are seeing clearly then we ARE to judge (to discern so that we can help remove the speck from our brothers eye and help others see clearly).

And, when it comes to social justice (a very trendy movement among progressives), understand that much of it is based on atheist Marxist teaching. I’ve heard it said by progressive leaders that there is much to learn from Karl Marx and others and that we must be willing to “take the good and leave the rest” or “eat the good meat and spit out the bones.”

Mixing worldviews does not work. The problem is that it demeans the sufficiency of God’s Word.

We do not need anything other than the Bible and the Holy Spirit to teach us the solution to all of humanities problems. It makes no sense to flock toward dead atheist leaders for answers to the world’s questions. Socialism, Marxist theories, dialogue and following ungodly atheist or agnostic leaders will not produce better Christians.

Everything we need is contained in the Word of God. The Bible is sufficient and complete. When you notice that a leader is continually pointing toward godless people for instruction and rarely ever mentions a call to holiness, repentance and transformation that is a good indicator that this isn’t a safe leader to follow.

In Daniel 1:8, Daniel knew that God had forbidden his people to eat meat that had been sacrificed to false Gods. God enacted this restriction because the act of eating this could have led faithful followers into false worship. God knew we could not just eat the good meat and spit out the bones. The act of mingling holy people with an unholy source is what we are avoiding. “…For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” 2 Corinthians 6:14

As we continue to see scripture fulfilled, I believe a great sifting will continue to take place.

According to research from George Barna released in 2021, 51% of Christians say they have a biblical worldview but only 6% of Christians actually have a biblical worldview. Worldview matters. Who we follow matters. We must be as a craftsman, accurately measuring all teaching with the the ultimate tool of precision we’ve been gifted, the measuring stick of God’s Holy Word.

God did not leave us his Word to confuse us, muddy up truths or make us guess. God’s Word is trustworthy, incapable of being wrong and full of all truth. We must be sure to understand that as we obey and proclaim God’s Word, we will and we should clash with our culture. People might call us names. They might try to force us to condone worldly behaviors. They might shun us, ban us, try to silence and censor us.

Just remember if you are a societal outcast or even persecuted against that their problem is not really with us at all. The conflict is between them and the sovereign almighty God. Don’t take it personally when you encounter opposition to biblical truth. They might incorrectly assume or say that you hate them. They might not understand that your unwillingness to go along with them is not hate but your love for their soul and your desire for them to know the joy of salvation and life eternal in Christ. “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.”James 1:2-3.

Be faithful.
Be holy.
Your worldview matters!
