It’s hard to navigate this world. We know evil is coming at us all day long. We know false teachers abound. We know Satan is still after hearts and souls and doing all he can to keep the lost from the One True God.
The Bible tells us false teaching will increase in the latter days. And just like false teaching has always been, it will mix truth with a lie. There will be a ring of truth but not all the truth. The lie will be crafted in such a way to make the lost think they are found by making the wrong seem acceptable, comfortable and even cool.
I think the “He gets us” ad from the Super Bowl is one such example of a dangerous half truth that is full of false teaching. For every one person who may become curious and seek the God of the Bible, 99 more will come away feeling more comfortable sitting lost in their sin.
What’s more, to spend so much money on a Super Bowl ad that is some say is to spark curiosity, you would think those behind the ad would include a clear presentation of the Gospel on their website. It’s not there.
Lots of people have had lots to say on this ad today…..I think Charlie Kirk’s take on the ad is pretty spot on—
“The He Gets Us ad is intentionally provocative trying to counter message the conservative church and attract people they feel are turned off to Jesus. It’s the classic seeker sensitive model which is usually half right and half wrong. They’re right that Jesus isn’t a “hater,” but He does hate sin. They’re right that you are free to come as you are, with all your sin. But the Truth of the Gospel is much closer to “Jesus loves you too much to leave you in your sorry state.” Come as you are but don’t stay as you are. Jesus didn’t die on a cross because He gets us, but to save us. The impression the ad leaves is that Jesus loves you for you, and that’s it! But Jesus also commanded us to “go now and sin no more.”
Maybe that’s asking too much out of a :60 ad, but I’m reminded of a recent discussion I had on the Whatever Podcast. One of the other panelists was an OnlyFans girl who wears a big cross, even in her videos. She was asked if she believed God approves of her career choice. She eventually said “probably not” but that Jesus accepts her anyway.
This is where this type of message leads in the minds and hearts of millions of everyday people, when in reality, the Gospel requires your whole life and it demands true repentance. The Gospel is so powerful that you can’t help but be transformed when you encounter it.
Half truths are not the Truth, but a lie. Pray that those who were compelled by the ad would find themselves in a church that preaches the whole Gospel.”
Thank you for always sharing and speaking the truth. 💖
